The human gut serves as an ecosystem for billions of microbes – the so-called microbiome. Each of us has a very individual microbiome. For example, identical twins share 99.5% of their genes, but only around 20% of their intestinal flora. This microbial community functions like an adaptive control system in our body.

The roles of the microbiome and the highly complex interrelationships are far from fully understood. The latest research findings point to metabolic, immunological, infectiological, neurological and epidemiological effects of the microbiome.

Scientists have discovered that the intestinal flora of people over 100 years of age has a characteristic composition of protective bacteria. Treating Symptoms – Ignoring the Root Cause

Practically every one of the above-mentioned complaints and symptoms could be treated with some form of medication. However, treatment will only be successful if we get to the bottom of the root cause of the symptoms. And this very often lies in the diet and impaired bowel function.

The gut-blood barrier permeability

To ensure that no undesirable foreign substances, such as pathogenic germs from food or the environment, enter the body, the intestine has three interacting protective layers:

  • The microbiome
  • The intestinal mucosa with its mucosal cells, which in a healthy state are held tightly together by so-called tight junctions.
  • The gut-associated immune system: it controls everything that enters our body as food.

The interaction of these three levels of protection forms the basis for healthy digestion, a functioning immune system and our well-being. Once this impenetrable barrier is weakened and permeable, more and more unwanted foreign substances enter the body uncontrollably – and cause far-reaching problems.

Leaky gut & silent inflammation

In leaky gut syndrome, the aforementioned gut-blood barrier is disrupted. Substances that do not belong there enter the bloodstream through the permeable intestinal mucosa. The immune system reacts by releasing inflammatory substances. One consequence is so-called silent inflammation.

These imperceptible, subclinical inflammatory processes in the body pave the way for a whole range of diseases, such as arteriosclerosis, chronic pain, autoimmune diseases (multiple sclerosis) and even tumors. Silent inflammation is also significantly involved in the premature ageing process – which we want to avoid at all costs as part of longevity!
